The European Medicines Agency announced on Friday that it would allow the vaccine, developed by a British and Swedish pharmaceutical company, to be used by all adults.
Vice Minister Živilė Simonaitytė told BNS early Friday that, as far as she knows, the EU agency’s recommendation is not to use the vaccine for older people, therefore younger people will be vaccinated in Lithuania.
After the official announcement of the agency, the deputy minister said that the decision in Lithuania will be made after a detailed analysis of the information.
“It is necessary to read your exact information in detail, as it is written exactly. If the European Medicines Agency does not impose restrictions on the elderly, we will follow their decisions, “the deputy minister told BNS on Friday evening.
“I understand that this may not be the answer you would like, but it is a question of extreme precision that I cannot answer without an accurate analysis of the EVA description,” he said.
The European Medicines Agency has stated in a public statement that there are currently insufficient studies on the effects of the vaccine in people over 55 years of age, but the vaccine is expected to provide protection based on other data, including the effects of other vaccines.
“EEA scientists believe the vaccine could be used in the elderly,” the report said.
The vice minister emphasized that the decision would be based on “not the press releases, but the specification of the drug.”
The German vaccination commission on Thursday recommended that AstraZeneca be vaccinated against COVID-19 only in people under 65 years of age.
