According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister stressed at the meeting that NATO is an indispensable guarantor of security in the Baltic region and throughout the Euro-Atlantic zone. The security environment in the Baltic region remains dynamic and the security challenges do not diminish, so it is necessary to continue to implement and strengthen the deterrence and defense measures agreed by the Allies on the eastern flank of the Alliance.
The Minister also confirmed that Lithuania will maintain its obligations to strengthen the country’s security and defense and, at the same time, will continue to contribute to international security.
“It is important that both NATO and the Allies pay due attention to security and defense issues during the COVID-19 crisis. As a trusted ally, Lithuania remains faithful to the principle of fair burden sharing agreed by NATO and will continue. contributing to NATO and other international operations and missions by continuing to strengthen national security and defense, ”said G. Landsbergis.
He stressed that a strong transatlantic link is a prerequisite for a strong NATO alliance, and that Lithuania will do its best to foster this link.
Since 2017, a German-led NATO battalion has been deployed to Lithuania. Representatives of the Lithuanian authorities recently called on the allies to strengthen the region’s air defense and ensure a faster deployment of forces in the event of a crisis.
In Brussels, Landsbergis also met with Stuart Peach, chairman of the NATO Military Committee, to discuss trends in military threats in the Baltic region.
The Minister emphasized that, given the vulnerability of the Baltic region, further progress is needed in the implementation of the decisions taken at the NATO Heads of State and Government meetings on force reinforcement and air defense.
After the meetings at NATO headquarters, the Minister will travel to Paris, where he will participate in the first meeting in 3 + 1 format of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Baltic and France during the two-day working visit) he will visit the Memorial of the Holocaust in Paris.
