The United Nations Committee has terminated the proceedings regarding the alleged disappearance of Laimutė Stankūnaitė’s daughter.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed to BNS that it had received a note that the United Nations Committee against Enforced Disappearances had terminated the urgent action procedure after evaluating the material submitted by the Lithuanian law enforcement agencies.
The procedure was initiated by Stanislovas Tomas, who introduced himself as a lawyer. According to the Ministry of Justice, the committee supported the position of the Government of Lithuania that it had no right to submit an application.
L. Stankūnaitė and her daughter are covered by a witness protection program and are considered protected persons.
Government spokeswoman Karolina Bubnytė told BNS that the completion of the procedure “creates preconditions to hope that this precedent will be followed in the future, preventing people from abusing unfounded requests.”
The United Nations Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance entered into force in 2013 in Lithuania.
