Replace the air filter
Check that you have not accidentally switched on the so-called interior air circulation, and if the fan is running but the windows continue to spray, check the condition of the cabin filter.
“Mechanics inspecting the car often overlook this element, especially if it is more difficult to reach. After a few months, the filter can become clogged, so the car’s ventilation will not be efficient and the windows will be sprayed constantly, ”says Žygimantas Tubutis, head of the Kemi service network.
It is recommended to change the cabin filter at least once a year, even more often in cars driving on dusty roads or long distances. “If the cabin filter is clogged, not only weak air is blown, but also the ventilation motor has a higher load and sometimes it does not withstand it,” says Ž.Tubutis.
However, not all mechanics think so. It is true that most car models can replace the cabin filter themselves, without even the need for special tools. All you have to do is have a normal screwdriver. Filters are usually installed under windows (accessible by opening the hood and removing the plastic cover) or in the cabin under the storage compartment.
If you park outdoors, open the hood and check that the leaves falling from the trees do not block the drain openings, which are usually located under the windshield, protected by a plastic grill.
Look under the windshield wipers and floor mats. If the car is wet due to, for example, water entering the cabin through the gaskets of the damaged windows or the sunroof, it is not worth waiting for good visibility.
Damage to heating shoulders
This problem is even more acute in winter, when the accumulated moisture in the glass turns to ice. Then you have to scrape not only the outside but also the inside of the glass, the frost falls on the panel, turns into water and the wheel turns. Anyone who has experienced this problem knows that it is a very rare pleasure. Experts say that the windows of a neat car cannot be sprayed chronically. If that happens, something is wrong.
This is probably the most serious problem that teachers will have to tackle. One of the most common reasons why windows are very wet is holes in the heating arms. Then moisture enters the cabin, and as a result, the windows begin to spray. If you notice that the coolant often disappears, it may be a leaky shoulder. Through the internal heating of the shoulders, the liquid flows into the cabin, accumulates moisture and fog the windows. The same coolant, antifreeze, circulates through the shoulders of the cab heater.
This problem can occur if you rarely or don’t change your antifreeze at all. The coolant must be changed in the same way as the grease. Maybe not that often, but it is necessary. The antifreeze also loses its properties and the details begin to rust, rust and eventually break down – the system rusts from the inside. The coolant is like a grease that protects against corrosion.
Also, not all cars have the same refrigerants. It’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, as some cars require a specific coolant.
Sources of humidity in the cabin
Cabin air circulation is on. Most cars have a shock absorber that allows you to create internal air circulation in the cabin. This automatically reduces air circulation and increases humidity levels, as the vapors exhaled by humans enter a limited volume of the environment.
Clogged water gutters. Gutters that divert water from the roof usually end in drain openings under the windshield. If these channels are clogged with leaves, dirt or debris somewhere, the diversion of the water drain is interrupted and it can get under the tires. Also noteworthy is the tightness of the rubbers. Water can enter not only through the poorly insulated sides of the windshield, but also through the sunroof if it is in the car.
Other sources of humidity in the cabin. Drivers do not always pay attention to the fact that after the rainy week, the mats have been sold out. Fogging of windows can be caused by any additional sources of moisture in the cabin, so if the heating and air supply system is weak, it’s best to keep wet clothes, umbrellas, and other fall attributes in the trunk.
In autumn, it is very important that the car, and especially its windshield, is clean. Cars in the front splash the front of your car with dirty water, and when you leave the car parked, you may find it covered in fallen leaves. Get in the habit of cleaning your windows regularly – you’ll have better visibility and your windshield wipers will last longer. By cleaning a clean surface, the windshield wipers will clean the water much better and will not burn any longer. If you notice that the windows remain dirty even when using the windshield wipers, check that the windshield wiper blades are clean and undamaged. Remember: damaged windshield wipers should be replaced as soon as possible.
Fall is a lot of rain and slippery roads. This lengthens the stopping distance. If you want to drive safely, your tires must be in good condition. The minimum tread depth for summer tires is 3mm and for winter tires 4.5mm. If your tires have already reached the minimum limit, they need to be replaced. The tires should also be replaced if they are old. In general, the use of winter tires older than 5-6 years is not safe.
Tires should be replaced as soon as the weather starts to change. In October, the average temperature during the day is 10 ° C; it’s time to start thinking about changing tires. It is already necessary to change the tires at a constant temperature of about 7 ° C. Remember: the service must be booked in advance, so do not delay changing the tires until the last minute.
Lights are important
In late fall, the sealing rubbers become extremely vulnerable. During the day, when it’s hotter, they get wet, and at night, when the temperature drops below zero, the water freezes. This damages the sealing rubbers. When you can’t open the door in winter, think about it, maybe it’s due to neglect in the fall. If you want the sealing rubbers to last the next winter, wipe them clean and cover them with a silicone sealant.
Of all the parts to prepare for fall, the lights are probably the most overlooked. It is surprising how important they are to safe driving.
It is better to check the lights regularly. At least once a month, the passenger should be asked to verify that the lights are working properly. It would be even better to do it every week. Remember: it is not necessary to burn out the bulb to replace it. If the light is dimmer than it should be, then something is wrong and the bulb probably won’t work anytime soon.
Battery status
In autumn, the car starts to consume more electricity: it is necessary to heat the interior and use the windshield wipers, and soon the mirrors and the rear window will also have to be heated. As the fall approaches, all electrical components should be checked for operation. Wait 15 minutes for this: turn on the interior heating, air conditioning, car heater, interior lighting, check that the mirrors and windows are working properly. Do this by starting the engine or you will waste the battery.
If you check your battery in the fall and find that it needs to be repaired or replaced, you will still have plenty of time to repair the old one or choose a new one. However, if the car fails to start on a winter morning, your decisions will be affected by a severe lack of emotion and time.
How to evaluate the condition of the battery? The voltage of a fully charged battery should be 12.6 V. If the voltage drops to 12.4 V, the battery is discharged. The self-discharge current should also be checked and should not exceed 5 mA (0.05 A). Self-discharge current is the electricity consumed by various car accessories (computer, radio, or alarm system) with the engine off.
Before visiting a workshop, you can check that the battery is securely attached and the terminals are clean.
