Some people grow Burmese pythons at home as pets. They entered the city of Everglades in South Florida after escaping from their hosts or were illegally released and quickly established themselves in tropical swamps. Wetlands and wet grasslands are a great environment for large snakes to thrive. With little competition, they have become a painful problem for local ecosystems.
Hunters fighting this species have removed more than 5,000 pythons from the Everglades, but there are still around 3,000 here.
