Giedrius Petrikas, head of the Lietuvos Draudimas Department of Transport Claims, denies such a rumor to the tv3.lt news portal and says he has not heard of such cases.
“We have not recorded any event of this type when the accident is caused by an animal that is freely transported in the cabin,” says the insurance expert.
Not everyone knows how to transport their pets safely
However, insurers recognize that not receiving an insurance benefit is not the only danger in transporting your pet in the car cabin.
According to Viktorija Katilienė, director of the Gjensidige Claims Department for the Baltic countries, not all people who keep animals care enough about their safety, especially when it comes to longer car trips.
“Some pets like to sit on the floor of a car in the summer. There have been cases where animals prevent the brake pedal from being depressed at the exact moment when the vehicle needs to be braked. G. Petrikas adds that there are cases in which animals transported unsafe are injured in a traffic accident.
“Although many owners transport their pets by car, this is rare according to the rules. The Road Traffic Rules (KET) stipulate that the driver must ensure the safety of pets in a stationary vehicle and ensure that pets are transported in such a way that they do not interfere with driving, injure or injure road users if the vehicle stops abruptly. ” , – explains the insurance expert.
Insurance experts advise not to be afraid to discipline an animal
In his opinion, the biggest problem is the reluctance of owners to discipline their pet, which in the event of an accident can end tragically.
“Some owners allow the animals in the car cabin to sit and act freely: lie down or walk around the car cabin, get on the driver’s knees. Traveling this way is dangerous for a pet. The pet must be transported in the car safely.
If, for example, a free dog is left in the trunk, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of an accident. During an accident, a shock is experienced and it stops abruptly, so the dog can jump in front of the car, injuring, injuring a person or even dying ”, G.
