Defenders: some 40 people were arrested during protests in Minsk

The list of detainees is published on the centre’s website. It shows that most of the people were arrested during the student demonstration.

According to Viasna, there are three journalists among those arrested.

Roman Laškevičius, representative of the Main Board of the Interior of the Executive Committee of the city of Minsk, said that an administrative process had been initiated against the detained journalists.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists previously announced the arrest of several media outlets, including correspondents for the BelaPAN and RIA Novosti news agencies, as well as onliner.by.

A student march took place in Minsk on Saturday and later the traditional Saturday women’s demonstration.

In Belarus there have been unprecedented protests for more than two months over the August 9 presidential election, which was won by authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and Western countries consider these elections rigged .
