Kirkilas emphasized that no further evaluation was possible: the social workers themselves could not impose disciplinary sanctions on him, since V. Šmigelskas was not a member of the party and it was not possible to remove him from the candidate lists after the elections: “Now the voters will decide all”.
Kirkilas: “It is unfortunate that people do not resist the tension”
G. Kirkilas tried to justify V. Šmigelskas to the tv3.lt news portal that people cannot bear the tension.
“It is a pity that people do not resist the tension. Everyone is individual and there have been several similar cases before the elections.
And this choice is special. Due to the coronavirus, certain rules had to be followed, everything is here and people react differently. But I haven’t been able to speak to him yet, so I can’t comment on anything else. Now they want to hear what the person will say and how they will explain the situation, ”said G. Kirkilas on tv3.lt and explained that he has not yet been able to communicate with himself.
“He used to be a member of the Seimas, but I don’t remember someone like him having been with him,” added G. Kirkilas.
The news portal tv3.lt is still unable to contact V. Šmigelskas.
How will the party respond?
When asked if such an event could affect the entire party before the elections, Kirkilas did not rule it out: “The downside is certain. We will see soon, there are only two days left ”.
In a report circulated, the electoral staff of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Labor Party also deplore the irresponsible actions of V. Šmigelskas.
“We do not know the details of the situation, because the staff could not contact V. Šmigelskas. Such events are painful lessons for everyone,” the party said in a statement.
CEC President: “There is still no legal basis for removal”
Laura Matjošaitytė, president of the Central Election Commission, told tv3.lt that there is no legal basis for removing V. Šmigelskas and preventing her from participating in the elections.
“So far, there is no legal basis to exclude and exclude from the elections. Until now, no process has been completed for him in terms of driving under the influence of alcohol. Some penalties have not yet emerged later.
The law establishes that people who have not served their sentence according to a court ruling 65 days before the election cannot be elected members of the Seimas, ”said the president of the CCA.
“There is still no judicial verdict in this place, the process is still ongoing. Everything is up to the electorate. The voters value the facts and that information, the acquittal or the conviction ”, added L. Matjošaitytė.
