Klaipėda City Municipality has published a survey of residents “Do you agree that the Pauostis railway line should be extended in the Melnragė-Giruliai forest?” This survey is expected to uncover the position of Klaipeda residents by the end of October: Do they agree that the railway should be expanded by reducing coastal forest?

To preserve the Giruliai forest, Klaipėda leaders submitted a proposal to the Government on June 22 to modify it. Resolution “On the start of the preparation of development plans for the communications engineering infrastructure of the Klaipėda railway crossing of the trans-European transport corridor IX B”.

If this project were to be implemented, the planned infrastructure development in the Giruliai forest could have to cut down 30 to 50 hectares of forest.

Both the Government and the Lithuanian Railways did not comment on whether the needs of the city would be taken into account, therefore, at the initiative of some Klaipėda politicians, a survey of the population was published.

This angered the people of Klaipeda, who have been making demands on the country’s top government for more than a month.

For its part, the municipality has drawn up a plan to avoid the undesirable consequences of railway development for the city.

“The new project includes clear safeguards to ensure that the Giruliai forest is not affected. I hope that the Government understands the concern of Klaipeda residents and is not afraid to enshrine the protection of forests in its resolution, which we will present. Self-government of the autonomous government to initiate a draft resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania should be considered as a strong and clear position of the city of Klaipeda, which literally defends and protects the “green lungs” of the city, assured the mayor of Klaipeda , Vytautas Grubliauskas, at the end of July.

After more than two months, there has been no change.

Both the Government and the Lithuanian Railways did not express a position on whether the needs of the city would be taken into account, so at the initiative of some Klaip deda politicians a population survey was published “Do you support the expansion of the Pauostis railway in the Melnragė-Giruliai forest? “

Klaipėda residents can participate in the survey, which contains this single question, until October 31. both online and live.

“The aim of this survey is to involve the population in solving problems important to the city and society,” said Modestas Vitkus, secretary of the Klaipėda City Council.
