The Kremlin is trying to downplay the role of Belarusian opposition activist Cichanouskaya

Cichanouskaya, a 38-year-old political rookie, has announced the victory of the country’s leader, Aliaksandr Lukashenko, in the August presidential elections.

After the disputed election officials announced that Lukashenko had won, the country was overwhelmed by opposition protests, and Cichanouskaya was forced to leave his homeland and fled to Lithuania to avoid arrest.

Last week in Lithuania, S. Cichanouskaja met with French President Emmanuel Macron and flew to Germany on Tuesday to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel.

On Wednesday, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian leader had no plans to contact Cichanouskaya.

“No contacts are planned,” Pescov told reporters, questioning his role in the country’s political life.

“Ms. Cichanouskaya is not in Belarus. Hardly anyone can say that she is involved in the life of Belarus in any way,” said D. Peskov.

“He is meeting with various heads of state and government who consider the current president of Belarus illegal,” he added.

Cichanouskaya seeks to increase international pressure on the Minsk regime without ending the protests in the streets of the Belarusian capital.

The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Belarusian officials, sparking outrage between Minsk and its ally Moscow.

Cichanouskaya became involved in the political struggle after the government imprisoned her husband, the popular blogger Siarhei Cichanouski, and banned him from running in the presidential elections.
