The great filmmaker Wood Wood Allen, whose real name is Alan Stuart Konigsberg, was born in 1935. New York. However, according to M. Galadauskas, movie star Isaac’s grandfather, great-grandfather Šmuelis, and great-grandfather Mauša (Moiše) are from Panevėžys. The entire Konigsberg family are Jews from Panevezys – Ponevezh, as the city was called during the Russian Empire.
“It’s an interesting discovery and somewhat unexpected, for some reason at least so far. But that’s what fascinates me about the discoveries,” says the expert on Jewish heritage.
M. Galadauskas and the average resident Panev mediožys himself. His father and grandfather are from Panevėžys. That is why it is not surprising that M. Galadauskas was very curious to know if there were traces of the family of the film legend on the streets of the city where he spent part of his childhood.
“My father is from Panevėžys, an ancient large Jewish city, my mother is from the Panemunė region, where the majority of the population was also Jewish. My parents are not Jewish, but more recently I discovered our Jewish roots. Therefore, this topic was and is the most interesting for me, “Marius told Sekundei.
Adopted by Russia
According to M. Galdauskas, the most famous filmmaker of the second half of the 20th century has his roots in Panevėžys, according to M. Galdauskas, he testifies to publicly available information. According to the historian, the origin of the director is proved by his family tree: the names and surnames of the Jews are listed in detail, the exact dates and places are indicated.
Because Marius himself was particularly interested in Jewish history and culture, being a researcher into the heritage of that nation, he was able to easily trace this astonishing fact. According to M. Galadauskas, V. Allen was born and raised in a house where Jewish traditions were observed.
“It has been known for a long time that Woody Allen has Jewish roots and that he is a Litvak. And he himself has spoken a lot about it. I doubt that he knows exactly where his ancestors came from. Russia has long been cited as his home country. All those born in Lithuania, who then belonged to the Russian Empire, were identified in this way. Until now, this makes it difficult to find the roots of the family, “explains M. Galadauskas.
According to him, the Russians wanted to “expropriate” V. Alen as if he were their own and had even built a monument to him in Königsberg. However, this error was later corrected and the correct country of origin was indicated: Lithuania.
The short and curious 84-year-old director and actor V. Alen is best known for his unique humor: he writes, directs and acts in most films. In Allen’s work there is a lot of philosophy, psychology, Jewish identity, European cinema and New York, where he was born and lives. Classics of contemporary cinema include such films as “Midnight in Paris”, “Melinda and Melinda”, “Highland Club”, “Viki, Kristina, Barcelona” or his latest work – “Rainy Day in New York”.
A collector of stories
Since M. Galadauskas discovered information about the origins of the cult film director less than a week ago, he has yet to take a closer look at the full history of the Konigsberg family of Panevėžys Jews. However, he does not hide that he is very curious about himself, and does not even doubt that if he begins to dig deeper, more consistently, very interesting facts can be traced.
M. Galadauskas is a certified guide, specializing in Jewish heritage and history. He conducts tours throughout Lithuania for the Litvaks, their descendants and guests who have Jewish roots in Lithuania or are seeking those roots.
“Now a large part of my work consists not only of field trips, but also of research. It so happened that I became a collector and researcher of interesting stories that I have infinite. The joy of discovering always motivates me ”, recognizes M. Galadauskas.
