“We, the nation, do not intend to discuss the constitution, which was proposed by Viktor Babaryka three months ago, with the regime. We will change it according to the Belarusian rules, not according to the rules of authoritarianism. The government already it has shown its attitude to any constitution, “said the headquarters of former Belarusian presidential candidate V. Babaryka in a statement.
The headquarters also issued a video appeal, which Mr. Kalesnikava recorded prior to his arrest.
“We have not forgotten about the referendum. An initiative group will be registered to organize a discussion on the issue of the restoration of the 1994 constitution throughout the republic,” said M. Kalesnikava.
According to her, “this is necessary due to the separation of powers, the restriction of presidential mandates and powers and the appointment of new parliamentary elections.”
He also reiterated his intention to register the party: “The party will emerge and a referendum will be held.”
Belarus has been holding massive protests for nearly two months over the August 9 presidential elections, announced by Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and Western democracies consider these elections rigged.
On August 18, supporters of Sviatlan Cichanouskaya, a former Belarusian presidential candidate, established a Coordination Council to organize a peaceful transfer of power, but virtually all members of his presidency have been arrested or expelled from Belarus.
The Belarusian government considers the Coordination Council to be an unconstitutional body.
The Presidium of the Coordination Council included Nobel Prize laureate Sviatlana Aleksijevič, founder of the international brokerage firm Lilija Vlasava, chair of the strike committee of Minsk Tractor Company (MTZ) Siarhejus Dyleuskis, lawyer Maksimas Znakas, candidate from the constituency of S. Cichanouskaya the staff coordinator M. Kalesnikava and the former director of the Janka Kupala National Academic Theater, Pavel Latuška.
M. Kalesnikava, member of the Coordination Council, lawyer Ilya Saley and M. Znak are currently in detention. They are considered political prisoners by Belarusian police organizations.
