According to Reuters, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the organization, called for solidarity and political commitment from all leaders to ensure the equitable distribution of vaccines as soon as they are available.

“We will need vaccines and there is hope that we can have the vaccine by the end of this year. There is hope,” Ghebreyesus said in a speech at the WHO Executive Board meeting that assessed the global response to the pandemic.

The organization also said Tuesday that it had begun evaluating the COVID-19 vaccine, which is being developed by US pharmaceutical company Pfizer in conjunction with German pharmaceutical company BioNTech, and announced the launch of an evaluation of the AstraZeneca vaccine last week.

Under the WHO Multilateral Coronavirus Vaccine Research and Funding Mechanism (COVAX), nine coronavirus vaccines currently under development could be distributed, with a target of € 2 billion by 2021. vaccine doses.

So far, 168 countries have joined the COVAX mechanism, but it does not include China, the United States or Russia. The administration of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has said that the country will have bilateral agreements in the process of obtaining the vaccine.

“The most important tool for vaccines and other products in development is the political commitment of our leaders, especially for the equitable distribution of vaccines,” Ghebreyesus said.

“We need each other, we need solidarity and we need to use all the energy we have to fight the virus,” he said.
