Rain and wind have dissipated increased air pollution, but particulate concentrations may still rise

“Everything has started since the rain on Saturday night, and today a fairly strong wind is forecast, it also saves. (…) For the moment, the danger is over. Last night we observed that the concentration of particulate matter is decreasing, ”explained Vilma Bimbaitė, Head of the Air Quality Assessment Division.

“On Sunday the daily limit value for particulate matter will not be exceeded, because according to current concentrations, I see that the situation has radically changed. (…) The air mass has changed, the dirty air mass has moved further east, and now we are getting a cleaner air mass from the south, so we can enjoy both the heat and the good weather ”, He added.

According to V. Bimbaitė, the concentration of particulate matter (PM10) was recorded in Lithuania up to three times, and in some cases up to four times more than on Thursday.

However, he stressed that air pollution could increase again on Monday and Tuesday.

“Those pollutants may come back, but the concentrations will be lower than, for example, on Friday,” said the head of the Air Quality Assessment Division of the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to her, the increase in pollution in Lithuania was caused by pollutants recovered from the air flows of southeastern southwestern Russia, southeastern Ukraine, where, according to satellite information, many forest fires are recorded.
