Hastens to impose retaliatory sanctions against Belarus: it won’t scare us

“This will not scare us, much less prevent the European Union from taking the decisions that are mature and that we discussed with President Macron, that EU sanctions are a necessity, a mere minimal necessity,” Nausėda said in Rukla .

The head of state stressed that if we still did not agree on European sanctions against the Belarusian regime, the image of the European Union as a power capable of solving geopolitical problems would be damaged.
“The president (Emmanuel Macron – ELTA) has agreed with this, and we will do everything possible to reach a decision of principle and a consensus of all EU countries without exception this week on the sanctions against Belarus,” he said G. Nausėda.

“National sanctions are not a substitute for decisions to be made at the EU level. Not only because the coverage is greater, but also because we are showing our solidarity with the Belarusian people in this way,” emphasized the Lithuanian leader.

According to the president, sanctions were imposed on the Aliaksandr Lukashenko regime precisely because there were simply no other alternatives in response to the situation in Belarus after the rigged presidential elections.

“The sanctions we have imposed have been based on the fact that, with other alternatives, we see no other way to force the regime to react to what it is doing and to draw your attention to the fact that such action is not justified in the central Europe, “said G. Sedimentation.

The Lukashenko regime announced retaliatory sanctions against citizens of the Baltic states on Tuesday. ELTA recalls that last week Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia expanded the sanctions list to include supporters of the Lukashenko regime responsible for violence against peaceful protesters and the falsification of the presidential elections in Belarus.

A “blacklist” was published in late August, adding 30 more names to 30 people, including Mr. Lukashenko. It was a reaction to Lukashenko’s secret inauguration as president last week. Both the leaders of the western states and the leader of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, declared that they did not consider Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus.
