“Girl, is this how you’re going to act?”

Okay. SO. Nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards were revealed this morning, with Leslie Jones hosting the ad show alongside a panel of remotely participating celebrities.

At one point in the broadcast that was equally confusing, funny, and extremely Clumsy, Leslie tried to surprise Laverne Cox with the news that she had just been nominated for an Emmy. Clearly, Leslie was aiming for a moving Moment of Television ™. But things …….. they did no work that way.

Leslie Jones told Laverne Cox that she is nominated for an Emmy live on air, and it didn’t go exactly as planned.

“You know what, Laverne? Laverne, I have something to tell you …” Leslie joked, as Laverne looked at her webcam, confused.

“You were nominated for an Emmy, in …” Leslie stopped to look over her shoulder at the crew. “… What category?”

Leslie then consulted with an off-screen producer, who tried to tell her what category Laverne was nominated for. At first, Leslie heard “Best Actress” and was very excited, but was quickly corrected to “Invited Actress “It’s still great!

Meanwhile, Laverne had clearly misheard Leslie, and thought he was referring to her. past Emmy Nomination in 2019: “I was nominated last year, Leslie, yes. Thank you,” she replied.

“I was supposed to do it that way more smoothly,” Leslie apologized, before trying again. She enthusiastically told Laverne that she had just won an Emmy, before correcting herself. again… because it was really just nominated for an Emmy

Laverne, still thinking that Leslie was referring to 2019, and now thinking that Leslie was calling her for not winning the 2019 Emmy, just stared, unsure of what to say.

“You have been nominated! You have been nominated!” Leslie yelled at the screen over and over, while Laverne stared at her. Meanwhile, Josh Gad and Tatiana Maslany, in an apparent attempt to end the discomfort, began to clap awkwardly.

“Can’t you hear me?” Leslie asked.

It’s unclear if there were any technical difficulties at the end of Laverne, or if she was confused by Leslie’s clumsy delivery, but she had exactly zero reaction to the nomination news, simply saying, “Okay, really?”

“Girl, is this how you’re going to act?” Leslie asked her, trying to make her more excited. “I would take my wig off! I would take that wig off!”

And after more exchanges between the two, with Leslie asking exasperatedly at one point: “Laverne, don’t you believe me?” Laverne finally accepted the news. “Okay!” was all she said with a chuckle and a shrug. And that was that.

Anyway, congratulations to Laverne on her FOURTH Emmy nomination for her role in Orange is the new black! You can see her full exchange with Leslie in all her glorious glory below:
