The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to add help for Tom Brady.
On Thursday, the team reportedly hired veteran running back LeSean McCoy for a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“He is very excited to play with established veterans like Brady and Gronk as he tries to win another championship,” said his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
Buffalo bills published McCoy last August, which saved them $ 6,425 million, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs soon after.
Kansas City had signed Carlos Hyde to help fill the void left by Kareem Hunt, but it quickly soured on him. The bosses downloaded it in an exchange to the Houston Texans, who cleared the way for McCoy’s arrival.
McCoy did not publish flashy numbers when he split carries with Damien Williams, but he was productive in his limited role. He ran for 465 yards and four touchdowns on 101 carries and caught 28 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown.
Among the 45 runners with at least 100 carries, McCoy was 28th in DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement), for Football outsiders.
Kansas City selected Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd overall pick, eliminating all chances of a meeting with McCoy.
McCoy’s average yards per carry dropped from 4.0 in 2017 to 3.2 in 2018 before the Bills moved on. He is also third among active players in total touches (2,950), so he has a lot of mileage on his body.
By managing his workload, the Chiefs helped McCoy stay effective. His 4.6 yards per carry was the second highest since 2013, his most recent All-Pro season.
That should be the model for Bucs. He will compete with rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn to endorse Ronald Jones II, and Tampa Bay may be looking to expand his role in the passing game compared to his season in Kansas City.
Given Jones’s inconsistency in his young career, McCoy could play a sizable role for the Bucs.
