Leon County boy hospitalized with COVID-19 as cases are shot in children

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (WTXL) – A boy under the age of five remains hospitalized in Leon County after contracting the coronavirus, as cases in children continue to skyrocket across the state.

Nearly 8,000 children across the state of Florida tested positive in just eight days.

Weeks before schools open, the number of new cases continues to rise.

As more children get sick, lawmakers urge Gov. Ron DeSantis to rethink opening schools and consider a statewide mask mandate.

“He and the president have failed all the children, teachers and educators in Florida and have put them at risk because of their reckless and reckless efforts to reopen schools,” said State Representative Donna Shalala (D).

Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, said scientists are still studying how quickly children under the age of 10 can transmit the virus, as many of them have stayed home and away from their peers during the peak months of this pandemic.
