LeBron James on Tuesday donned a custom “MAGA” hat to bring justice to Breonna Taylor, the Louisville EMT worker who was shot dead by police in her apartment in March.
James wore the hat at a news conference after his first playoff appearance for the Los Angeles Lakers, which they lost to the Portland Trail Blazers, 100-93.
The red hat closely associated with President Trump and his campaigns had the usual “Make America” as its first line, but had crossed “Great Again”. Instead, words were added that resulted in the hat reading “Make America Arrest the Cops Who Killed Breonna Taylor.”
James, who took an increasing role as social justice activistsaid Taylor, 26, “had a bright future and her life was taken away from her and there were no arrests and no justice, not only for her but for her family. And we want to continue to shed light on that situation. “That was unfair. That’s what it’s about.”
Earlier in the day, ETOnline reports, James and several teammates were photographed wearing hats as they left the Disney World Hotel, which has served as a home for players in the so-called NBA bubble.
The Lakers posted their photos the team’s Twitter page.
Taylor lost her life when officials broke into her apartment late on the night of March 13 with a search for drugs “no knock”. They did not find any drugs. One officer was shot by Taylor’s friend, who says he thought the officers were home invaders. He was initially charged, but the charges were eventually dropped. Only one of the three officers involved in Taylor’s death has been dismissed, and no one has been charged.
Taylor’s family fired officials in May, accusing them of unlawful death, excessive violence and gross negligence.
In June, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer signed “Breonna’s Law,” which bans the use of unsolicited searches and requires officers to carry body cameras when conducting searches.
The father of Michael Brown Jr., who was also shot dead by police in 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri, has also called for justice in Taylor’s case and recently traveled to Louisville to join a protest with up to freedom.
On Monday night, former First Lady Michelle Obama referred to Taylor’s death while delivering an incredible speech on the first night of the Democratic National Convention.
“Here at home, like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and an endless list of innocent people of color remain murdered. Told that the simple fact that a Black life is a matter is still met with ridicule from the nation’s highest office,” he said. Obama.
“Sadly, this is the America that is to be seen for the next generation,” she added.
