Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says that in recent years there have been adequate opportunities to end the crisis in Syria, “but each time we have come across attempts by some countries to thwart and squander these opportunities.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif highlighted the need to lift unfair and unjust sanctions against the Syrian government and people, especially in light of the coronavirus outbreak.
Zarif’s words came during his meeting with the special envoy of the United Nations Secretary General to Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday, when Zarif indicated that some countries have obstructed the political settlement of the Syrian crisis.
He said that in recent years, adequate opportunities had been provided to end the crisis in Syria, “but every time we find attempts by some countries to thwart and squander those opportunities,” as he himself put it.
For his part, Pedersen briefed Iran’s Foreign Minister on the latest developments of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and his efforts to hold the next meeting of that committee.
Pederson referred to Iran’s cooperation with the United Nations to resolve the Syrian crisis of 10 years ago, highlighting the importance of Iran’s role in this process.
Earlier today, the Iranian Foreign Ministry commented on Iran’s presence in Syria, saying that this presence is “consultative and whoever wants to break it will receive a decisive response”, denying the martyrdom of soldiers or members of the Revolutionary Guard Forces during the recent Israeli aggression against Syria.
