Zarif: Some countries are blocking the solution in Syria

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused some countries of obstructing the political settlement process in Syria.

During his meeting with the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday night, Zarif said: “The opportunity was available to end the Syrian crisis in recent years, but we are increasingly facing the efforts of some countries. to thwart the solution and miss opportunities. “

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Pedersen briefed Zarif on the latest developments by the Syrian constitution study committee and the efforts it is making to hold the next meeting, speaking of “Iran’s cooperation with the United Nations to resolve the crisis “and highlighting” the importance of Tehran’s role in this process. “

On the other hand, the Iranian foreign minister called for the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Syria due to the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. In a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Zarif highlighted the need to lift repressive and unjust sanctions on the Syrian government and people, especially in the context of the situation with the coronavirus.

The number of registered infections with the coronavirus is gradually increasing, and Syria has not yet reached the peak of the second wave expected for the spread of the virus at the general level.

Earlier, the deputy director of the Department of Communicable and Chronic Diseases of the Syrian Ministry of Health, Atef Al-Tawil, said: “Syria is heading towards a new peak”, adding that: “Some provinces are witnessing a gradual increase in the spread of the virus, including Hama, Homs, Lattakia and As-Suwayda. ” He continued: “The Ministry of Health has raised the readiness of all hospitals in preparation for the second wave.”

As of Saturday, the number of official wounded registered in Syria reached 7,079, of which 2,986 were cured and 368 died, while the actual number is expected to be much higher.
