On Friday, Iraqi activists on social media broadcast video clips showing hundreds of Iranians trying to storm Iraqi borders to participate in ceremonies for the visit of “40th Imam Hussein” in Karbala province.
According to activists, the Iranian visitors collided with Iranian border guards from the Shalamjah crossing and managed, after a short period, to storm the crossing and head for the Iraqi border, with one section showing dozens of Iranians running towards the Iraqi border, carrying religious flags chanting “Ya Hussein”, accompanied by some vehicles. .
For its part, the Iraqi Border Ports Authority issued a comment on the videos, a statement in which it said: “The decisions of the Ministerial Committee force the closure of land borders to the entry of Iranian and foreign visitors alike, due to to the spread of the Corona pandemic ”.
He added that the videos disseminated on social networks are “from within Iranian territory and the matter has been contained by them,” noting that “all our points of sale are completely closed, and the reality of security has been strengthened as a preventive measure for avoid any non-compliance, in cooperation and coordination with the Joint Operations Command “.
Notably, this is not the first time that the Iranians have attempted to storm the border with Iraq, as the same crossing witnessed, last June, a similar incident when the Iranians burned a room belonging to the Border Ports Authority in the port of Shalamjah, in protest to prevent them from entering Iraq.
