On Tuesday, rescue teams managed to pull a four-year-old girl out of the rubble of a building destroyed by the strong earthquake that struck western Turkey 91 hours after it struck.
A government agency for disaster management announced that the death toll from the earthquake, which measured 7 on the Richter scale, had risen to more than 100.
“We witnessed a miracle 91 hours after the earthquake … Rescuers removed four-year-old Ida while she was alive,” Izmir Mayor Tung Suyar wrote on Twitter.
“Besides the great pain we experience, we also have this joy,” he added. While the mayor indicated that the girl was 4 years old, Turkish Health Minister Fakhruddin Kuja returned and explained that she is three years old.
Aida was rescued from under the rubble of a destroyed building in the city of Bayrakli, which was hit hardest by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Greece on Friday afternoon.
The girl was carried out of the ruins of the building, wrapped in a blanket, and was calling for her mother, while the crowd present applauded and hugged each other, and others cried with emotion, while the takbeer sounded louder.
Ida asks about “Kofta and Laban”
“She smiled, she was waiting for us,” said Levent Onur, one of the rescuers who pulled Idah out, adding that the girl was trapped behind a washing machine, protecting her from injury during the building collapse.
Turkish media reported that the girl, who survived the Izmir earthquake, asked her doctors for “kofta and milk” and rescuers promised to comply with her request, as well as bring her father and uncle.
Rescuers said they knew someone was alive at the scene Monday night, so they worked hard all night to get to the girl. Before being rescued, she told them, “I’m here.”
The girl is considered the 107th person to be rescued from under the rubble of buildings destroyed by the Izmir earthquake.
