Debarsion Gabr Mikael leads the battle against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government for control of the northern region of Tigray, which is described as the “womb” of the nation.

He is a former guerrilla fighter and currently heads the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Tigrayans (TBLF), the party that controls the Tigrayans, and has been in great disagreement with Abe.

He is now married with one child, and in the 1970s he interrupted his studies at Addis Ababa University to join the Tigray People’s Liberation Front in its 17-year war against the Marxist regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam.

He then became a government minister after defeating the Marxist regime and replacing it with a coalition of parties dominated by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front until Abe took power in 2018.

The leader of Tigray belongs to an Orthodox Christian family, and he was called Dibberesion, which means Mount Zion, while his middle name is the name of his father Gabr Mikael, which means the servant of Saint Michael.

Debarsion had excelled in the TPLF’s “technical unit,” where he played a vital role in developing intelligence capabilities so that the front could eavesdrop on the Ethiopian army’s conversations and disrupt their communications.
