Pompeo added, according to Al Arabiya news channel, that the United States is concerned about Iran’s breach of its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Treaty, adding that recent U.S. sanctions have targeted one of the groups working on the chemical weapons industry in Tehran.
The US Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on Iranian entities and companies operating in military industries and placed them on the blacklist.
According to Reuters, the new US sanctions come as part of US President Donald Trump’s pressure on Iran in his final months in power.
The US Treasury Department said in a statement that it had imposed sanctions on an Iranian company and its manager, accusing the entity of being involved in the Iranian chemical weapons investigation.
And US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin declared in a statement that Iran’s development of weapons of mass destruction poses a threat to the security of its neighbors and the world.
