An official source in the US State Department said the US and France are awaiting clarification from Russia on Turkey’s role in the recent agreement, which was signed to end the fighting in Karabakh.
The US State Department official said, after talks between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian, that the two ministers “discussed in detail the situation in Karabakh, and how heads of (the Minsk group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), exchanged views, affirmed their commitment to their role as co-chairs of the Minsk Group … and praised the measures taken by Russia, which led to the ceasefire.
“But we also recognize that there are many issues that the Russians need to clarify, such as the criteria for the agreement, including the role of Turkey,” added the same source.
On the tenth of this month, the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, Vladimir Putin, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan, signed a joint declaration (agreement) that provides for the total cessation of hostilities in the Karabakh region.
Under this agreement, Russia sent peacekeepers to the Karabakh region and a center will be established in Azerbaijan to monitor the ceasefire, which will be supervised by Russian and Turkish forces.
Commenting on the Turkish presidency that submitted a memorandum to parliament on sending soldiers to Azerbaijan, the Kremlin said on Monday that Turkey’s plans to send troops to Azerbaijan are governed by the agreement between Ankara and Moscow on the establishment of a center. of joint monitoring for a ceasefire in the Karabakh region.
