The head of the “Lebanese Committee for Environment and Sustainable Development, Dr. Jalal Halawani”, warned in a statement that “behind the waste sorting plant, which is run by a company (…) commissioned by the Federation of Municipalities of Al-Fayhaa, huge quantities of used tires are stored. ” Recalling “the second fire in the port of Beirut and its dangerous environmental repercussions.”

And he considered that “storing these tires is contrary to the book of conditions that requires the management of the screening plant, which defined the task of the screening plant operating company and did not grant it the right to dispose of the laboratory drug as I would like, and in particular its use as an outdoor deposit for materials that could cause environmental disasters, in reference to the fact that the maximum time the company can store used tires is 48 hours.

And while wondering about the objectives of tire storage, he warned that “the presence of rubber tires next to the old landfill, in itself, poses a great danger to the environment and the health of citizens, since gas is emitted from the mountain of waste as a consequence of the decomposition of organic waste, and this gas is stored mainly inside the body. The mountain and quantities of it are emitted into the open air, and in case, God forbid, an electric spark is generated for some reason, the occurrence of a large fire in the region is a great possibility with consequent negative effects on the port of Tripoli and the residents of the cities of Tripoli and the port.

He concluded by calling on the Federation of Al-Fayhaa Municipalities to “take swift measures to eliminate this illegal storage as quickly as possible. The health of the citizens and the environment of the city are safe on their necks and it is not allowed to tolerate them.
