Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolfe summoned the United States National Guard to Philadelphia after a second night of violent demonstrations over police shooting a black man.

Hours after two police officers shot and killed a black man, violent clashes broke out between police and hundreds of angry protesters.

Lt. Col. Keith Hiccus said in a statement Tuesday that several hundred National Guard personnel would help local agencies “protect life and property and the right to peaceful assembly and protest.”

City leaders confirmed that the Philadelphia Police Department would strengthen its presence across the city in anticipation of further disruptions due to the death of 27-year-old Walter Wallace Jr.

Reports indicated that Wallace suffered from mental problems and was shot by two officers in response to a call about a person carrying a weapon.

Police said he was armed with a knife and refused to drop it to the ground.

The shooting sparked outrage among residents and hundreds of people took to the streets in protest.

The meetings turned violent and some 30 officers were injured, including one officer who was deliberately run over by a van.

At least 8 police cars were set on fire.

In a joint statement, Presidential candidate Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris denounced Wallace’s death and the confusion that followed.
