On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on Iran. These sanctions included 4 individuals and 6 entities linked to Iran.

This comes as three informed sources told Reuters on Monday that the United States is expected to impose sanctions during the weekend at the earliest against Iranians who participated in the crackdown on anti-government demonstrations in Iran about a year ago.

The sources, who asked not to be named, claimed that the announcement of the sanctions coincides with the anniversary of the first anniversary of what is considered the most violent crackdown on protesters in Iran since the 1979 revolution.

One of the sources said that the announcement of the sanctions next week would be a big step for many people and dozens of Iranian entities.

“Reuters” had previously said, citing three officials from the Iranian Interior Ministry, that some 1,500 people were killed during unrest that lasted less than two weeks, beginning on November 15 last year. This number includes at least 17 teenagers and some 400 women, as well as members of the Iranian security forces and the police.

The Iranian Interior Ministry announced that some 225 people were killed in the protests, which were sparked by media reports stating that gasoline prices will increase by 200% and that the proceeds will go to helping families in need. The sources, including a US official and two people familiar with the matter, said the US administration has been preparing for sanctions for months.
