Griffiths to Asharq Al-Awsat: I am happy with this achievement and look forward to progress on the other files.
The Yemeni government and the Houthi group agreed yesterday to exchange about a thousand prisoners from both sides, in a first stage scheduled for the next two weeks, according to a Yemeni official, with the participation of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The office of the UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, confirmed in a statement yesterday that representatives of the Yemeni government and the Houthis agreed to the immediate release of a first group of 1,081 detainees and prisoners, according to the agreed lists of names. This came at the end of the fourth meeting of the oversight committee charged with the implementation of the prisoner and detainee exchange agreement that began a week ago in Switzerland.
Griffiths commented in an exclusive statement to Asharq Al-Awsat via email, of course, that he is “happy with this achievement.”
The UN envoy, who enjoys notable international and regional support, hopes that “the two sides will move quickly to implement and begin planning more launches. This would help to generate the necessary confidence to advance in other processes ”.
