Washington: The United States recorded a record number of Covid-19 cases on Saturday for the second day in a row, according to the Johns Hopkins University benchmark, which updates its data frequently.
The country recorded 88,973 new infections between Friday at 8:30 p.m. and the same time on Saturday, a figure much higher than the 79,963 injuries that were registered the previous day.
Total deaths in the United States reached 224,751 of eight million of 568,625 injured, the highest number in the world.
The United States had already hit the threshold of 80,000 infections per day during July, especially due to hot spots in southern states like Texas and Florida, where the virus was out of control at the time.
Currently, the worst outbreaks of the virus are in the north of the country and the Midwest, at a time when about 35 of the 50 states are witnessing an increase in the number of infections.
For its part, the number of deaths during a 24-hour period has remained practically stable since the beginning of autumn, with between 700 and 800 new deaths registered. And on Saturday there were 906 deaths.
On Saturday, former US President Barack Obama accused his successor, Donald Trump, of “failing” in managing the Covid-19 epidemic, during a rally in support of Democratic candidate Joe Biden in Miami.
“Eight months after the start of this epidemic, new infections are still breaking records,” he said.
Trump, however, was optimistic despite falling behind his rival in opinion polls.
