On Friday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Iran to stop carrying out the death sentence against a young man belonging to the Baloch minority, after he was found guilty of belonging to “terrorist” groups.

“We call on the authorities to stop the execution of the death sentence handed down against Javed Dehghan,” UNHCR, 31, said in a statement posted on its official website.

OHCHR also asked Tehran to review all “other death sentences in accordance with human rights law”.

Dehghan was arrested in 2015 and, two years later, was sentenced to death on charges of belonging to an armed opposition group and participating in an armed attack.

The commission indicated that Dehghan was held in solitary confinement for 15 months and was forced to confess under torture that he was a member of an armed group and shot dead two Revolutionary Guards officers, but later retracted these confessions.

The young man’s lawyer said that the Iranian Supreme Court refused to appeal the case and set 30 this month as the date for the execution of the execution, and informed his family that they could pay him one last visit.

This development comes in the wake of an offensive against religious minorities in Iran, which has been launched since mid-December 2020, according to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

UNHCR spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said the campaign included a series of executions of people belonging to ethnic and religious minorities, such as Kurds, Ahwazi Arabs and Baluchis.
