Iran has increased operations to lure dissidents to sites where they could be kidnapped or killed in recent years, according to a report by “Business Insider” on Thursday.
The report said that these operations culminated in the execution of the opposition journalist, Ruhollah Zam, last Saturday, who was arrested in October 2019 after leaving France for Iraq.
Several security officials told Business Insider that the murder of Zam and other similar cases would constitute a major obstacle to Tehran’s efforts to resume negotiations on its nuclear program under US President-elect Joe Biden.
The site published a list of names of Iranian citizens and foreigners who were arrested by the Iranian authorities after they were lured by their agents across the Middle East, including:
Saeed Karimian, opposition journalist and director of the Persian network “Gem TV”, killed in Istanbul in 2017.
Iranian dissident Masoud Mawlawi Vardanjani, who was also assassinated in Istanbul in October 2019.
Al-Ahwazi dissident Habib Asyoud, known as “Habib Shaab”, is believed to have been lured by Iranian intelligence to Turkey and then kidnapped and taken to Iran in October 2019.
The opposition Jamshid Sharmhad, leader of the US-based opposition group Tender, was arrested by Iranian intelligence agents in Dubai last July, according to the “Business Insider” website, while other reports indicate that he was arrested in Tajikistan. .
