The case of the American businessman of Iranian origin, Baqer Namazi and his son, interacts, as more than 150 former employees and international activists demanded their release from the Iranian authorities.

Former United Nations and UNICEF employees and Iranian scholars in the diaspora expressed concern about the deteriorating health of Siamak Namazi, 49, son of businessman Baqer Namazi (84 years old).

On Wednesday, the Persian-language Radio Farda, based in the Czech capital Prague, published the text of an open letter in which these people called for the release of Baqer and Siamak Namazi after five years in prison.

Iranian authorities accuse Namazi and his son of collaborating with the US administration, arresting the latter on October 13, 2016, before detaining his father a year later after he arrived in Iran for the purpose of obtaining legal assistance.

And one of Iran’s so-called revolution tribunals (whose rulings are criticized by human rights organizations) punished the father and his son with 10 years in prison each, the latter with a fine of $ 170,000.

It should be noted that Namazi was governor of Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran before 1979, and is a prominent retired member of UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), and his son Siamak was a human rights activist.

Yesterday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for Siamak Namazi’s release, and Pompeo described Namazi’s continued incarceration as an “immoral” act, calling for his speedy release along with Baqer Namazi and Murad Tahbaz.

Environmental activist Murad Tahbaz was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Iran for alleged collaboration with the United States.

A US State Department official had previously called for the release of American-Iranian Murad Tahbaz from prison due to his cancer, according to Al-Ain News.
