Turkish driver Noyan Basin, accused of assisting Carlos Ghosn in his dramatic escape from Japan, said he did not know the former Nissan CEO was on board.
Basin’s comments were presented as the case against him and several employees of Turkish airlines continued to be considered.
He added before today’s court session Thursday that he did not know Ghosn was on board that plane, except for media reports after the flight, and emphasized that he directed the flight as requested by the company, and had no opportunity to intervene at any stage of Ghosn’s escape.
“Even if we wanted to, there was no possibility for us to intervene because the local authorities had full control of the matter. We had no connection with the escape process and we only operated the flight,” he told Reuters.
Ghosn was arrested in Japan at the end of 2018 and charged with not disclosing his real salary at the company and using his money for personal purposes, charges he denies.
Ghosn was awaiting trial while under house arrest in Japan, when he fled in December last year to his hometown of Beirut, crossing Istanbul.
