The president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed on Friday the removal of Sudan from the list of states that sponsor terrorism, according to the Sudan Sovereignty Council.
Trump said in a tweet on his official Twitter account on Monday that “Sudan’s new government, which is making tremendous progress, agreed to pay $ 335 million to victims of terrorism and their families.”
He added: “Upon payment, I will remove Sudan from the list of states sponsoring terrorism.” He continued: “Ultimately, justice is for the American people and a great step for Sudan.”
The Sudanese Finance Minister had confirmed to Al-Arabiya / Al-Hadath this week that Khartoum had begun transferring $ 335 million in compensation to American victims of terrorism and their families in exchange for removing Sudan from the terrorism list.
A spokeswoman for the US State Department said in a statement that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke by phone with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, and both sides welcomed US President Trump’s promise to proceed to eliminate Sudan. from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
He added that Pompeo praised Hamdok’s efforts thus far to improve Sudan’s relationship with Israel and expressed his hope that these efforts will continue.
Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok on Tuesday commented on the US willingness to remove Sudan from the terrorism list, saying: “Since we assumed responsibility, we have started a serious dialogue with the US administration,” noting that ” what we have accomplished today opens the door wide for our return to the international community. “
The statement, posted on the official page of the Sudan Sovereignty Council on Facebook, declared that this day is “a historic day for Sudan and its glorious revolution.”
For his part, the Sudanese Prime Minister thanked President Trump, saying: I thank the President of the United States for signing an executive order to remove our country’s name from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. He added: “The decision to remove Sudan from the terrorism lists will open the door for its return to the international community.” In this regard, Israel and Sudan have agreed to initiate economic and trade relations.
