The president of the Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee, Yoshiro Mori, refused to resign after making insulting statements to women, despite the pressure he was subjected to.
“I don’t think he’s going to resign,” said Mori, a former Japanese prime minister. “I have worked hard and devotedly helped for seven years. I will not retire.”
For its part, the International Olympic Committee had stated that it would not urge Morrie to resign, saying his apology was sufficient, according to an American Associated Press report.
Mori, 83, had said in a meeting earlier this week, in which she said that women talk a lot in meetings, which has caused outrage in Japan.
“The statement I made to the Olympic Committee was an inappropriate statement,” Morrie said, apologizing. “I am deeply sorry. I would like to withdraw this statement. I would like to apologize for any unpleasant feelings.”
Mori’s statement came in response to a question about the limited presence of women on the Japanese Olympic Committee.
“If we have more directors, someone has noticed that the meetings are going to last a long time, unless we limit the comments … I will not say who this person is,” Mori added during the meeting.
