“We hope to be able to launch the vaccine very quickly, which will greatly reduce the pressure on hospitals,” said Ugur Shaheen, founder of Biontech.
He said it would take 30 percent of Americans immunized with vaccines to begin to notice a difference, Shaheen told Fox News, indicating that this could happen next April, provided the virus is controlled globally by the end of the summer of 2021.
On Friday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially granted emergency approval for the coronavirus vaccine produced by Pfizer and Biontech, paving the way for official distribution of the long-awaited large-scale treatment.
And Shaheen, chief executive of Biontech, said in an interview with “Reuters” earlier that the biggest hurdle for the emerging coronavirus vaccine is increasing manufacturing to meet the huge demand.
He added: “It is very clear that more doses are needed and we are addressing this issue, that is, how to produce more doses.”
He added that he expects the companies to receive conditional approval from the European Medicines Agency by the end of the month and could start rolling out a vaccine in European countries early next year.
One of the ways Shaheen hopes to increase supply is by moving forward with the acquisition of the Biontech plant, which has a capacity of 750 million doses per year, which was purchased from Novartis in Marburg, Germany.
