Four people died in a plane crash in Guatemala while on a drug trafficking flight between Venezuela and Mexico.
The Guatemalan anti-drug police said in a statement on Thursday that the plane crashed on Tuesday night, Wednesday, in a remote area located 130 kilometers north of the capital Guatemala, according to “AFP.”
He added that the plane took off from the Mexican city of Cuernavaca (80 km south of Mexico City), returning to Venezuela, and was flying illegally in Guatemalan airspace.
The statement indicated that investigators found three kilograms of cocaine and weapons in the wreckage. He added that two bodies were found on Wednesday and two more on Thursday.
Initial investigations showed that one of the dead was a wanted drug trafficker since his escape in March 2019 from a Guatemalan prison.
According to the Guatemalan Ministry of the Interior, the US authorities had previously requested the extradition of this prisoner from Guatemala, accusing him of being a member of a drug transport network from Latin America to the United States.
Since the beginning of the year, Guatemala has detected 26 smugglers, most of them in remote areas of the country. Last year, 54 planes were intercepted, on suspicion of illegal transfers.
The United States says that 90 percent of the cocaine smuggled into its territory is transported by air, land and sea, by ship, or sometimes in submarines, through Central America and Mexico.
