Jerusalem / Abdul Raouf Arnavut / Anatolia –
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out reaching peace with Lebanon as long as the Hezbollah organization “continues to control.”
“As long as Hezbollah continues to maintain effective control over Lebanon, there will be no real peace with this country,” Netanyahu told a session of the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) to approve the agreement to normalize relations with the UAE.
Netanyahu asked the Lebanese government to “continue talks with Israel, on the water frontiers.”
“These talks may be the first sign of peace that could occur in the future,” he said.
Netanyahu defended the agreement to normalize relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
“In our region, the strong are better able to survive, the strong are respected, the strong make alliances, and the weak are crushed,” Netanyahu said.
He added: “Many Arab and Islamic countries are seeking rapprochement with Israel, which was seen as an enemy for decades, and today it is seen as a strong ally, and even a vital ally.”
He continued: “Many Arab and Islamic countries are calling for a rapprochement with us, seeing our military strength and changing their attitude towards us.”
Netanyahu denied that there were “secret annexes to the agreement with the United Arab Emirates.”
And Netanyahu criticized the Arab Knesset MPs, who announced their intention to vote against the deal.
Netanyahu’s speech was boycotted by various Arab lawmakers and the opposition.
And Netanyahu considered that “the Palestinians will eventually understand that they must recognize Israel as a Jewish state.”
Israeli opposition chief Yair Lapid praised the deal with the United Arab Emirates, but said Netanyahu had failed on all other issues, including Corona and the economy.
He went to Netanyahu and said, “Mr. Prime Minister, we live here in Israel, not in the (Arab) Gulf.”
The Israeli Knesset is due to vote later Thursday on the deal.
