On Thursday, September 17, 2020, Russia considered that it would be “wrong” to think about the possibility of achieving a lasting peace in the Middle East without resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The statement from the Foreign Ministry came after the UAE and Bahrain signed an agreement to normalize relations with Israel at the White House on Tuesday.
Russia stated that it had taken note of the “progress” in normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab countries, but indicated that “the Palestinian problem remains dangerous.”
“It would be a mistake to think that lasting stability in the Middle East would be possible without a solution,” he added.
Moscow also urged regional and international actors to “intensify coordinated efforts” to solve the problem.
The Foreign Ministry said that “Russia is ready for such joint action”, including within the framework of the Quartet on the Middle East (the European Union, the United Nations, Russia and the United States) in close coordination with the Arab League.
US President Donald Trump indicated that similar agreements will soon be reached between the Hebrew state and several other countries, including Saudi Arabia.
Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates were the first two Arab countries to establish relations with Israel, after Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday that only an Israeli withdrawal from the territories it occupies will bring peace to the Middle East.
