“Diplomacy with Iran continues, but not directly at this time,” Sullivan told reporters.
He continued: “There are communication channels through Europeans and others that allow us to clarify to the Iranians our position regarding the compromise approach in exchange for compliance with the agreement and listen to their position (they too).
The new administration of US President Joe Biden refused to give Tehran unilateral incentives to start talks, but emphasized the possibility that the two sides will take reciprocal steps to resume implementation of the agreement, an approach described by Washington as “mutual compliance.”
Sullivan added: “At this point, we are waiting to hear more from the Iranians about how they want to move forward. It will not be easy, but we believe that we are now going through a diplomatic process and that we can move forward and ultimately ensure that our goal is achieved, which is to prevent Iran. “Obtain a nuclear weapon through diplomacy.”
The United States said on February 18 that it was ready to speak with Iran That both countries resume compliance with the agreement aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, in an effort to revive an agreement from which Washington withdrew in 2018.
Iran began violating the accord in 2019, nearly a year after the previous administration of US President Donald Trump withdrew and reimposed economic sanctions. Tehran has accelerated its violation of the agreement in recent months.
Each side insisted that the other initiate a return to the agreement, as Tehran demanded that Washington lift economic sanctions, while the United States, in turn, asked Tehran to once again comply with the restrictions imposed on its nuclear program.
