The Lebanese Union of Supermarkets issued a statement strongly denouncing the fact that the Minister of the Interior did not exempt supermarkets from the closures that it imposed in accordance with the decision issued today under No. 1205. It demanded that the exemption apply to supermarkets as in previous closure decisions, while strictly monitoring those who enter the supermarket and enforcing all required protections. That supermarkets have already applied since last March.
The Union confirmed that this decision does not correspond at all to what was applied in similar cases worldwide, noting that countries that developed a similar plan did not force supermarkets to close their doors, taking into account that stores do not have with a delivery service of thousands of orders per day.
The union considered that this decision will lead to overcrowding in the surrounding supermarkets, which increases the risk of the Corona virus outbreak, and also to the stumbling of the supermarkets covered by this decision, especially since the latter does not have the capacity to dispose of fresh products such as meat, cheese, milk and vegetables, through delivery, who will sign it. Great losses that they cannot bear in the face of the crisis in the economic situation.
The union concluded its statement by appealing to the Minister of the Interior to exclude it from the decision, while affirming its commitment to apply all required and universally accepted preventive health measures on employees and clients.
