On Tuesday, the prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon requested life imprisonment for Salim Ayyash, who was convicted about three months ago in the murder case of former prime minister Rafik Hariri.
This came during a session held by the trial chamber of the court (based in The Hague in the Netherlands), to hear oral arguments related to the determination of punishment in the case of Ayyash et al.
According to the official Lebanese agency, prosecutor Nigel Bafwas told the court: “The harshest punishment in court is life imprisonment. The prosecution believes that this is the only fair and appropriate trial.
He added: “Why life imprisonment? These are very serious crimes. This is the most serious terrorist attack that is taking place in Lebanese territory.”
On August 18, the court convicted Ayyash, “in absentia”, a member of the Lebanese group “Hezbollah”, for being behind Hariri’s murder, while acquitting three other defendants, Hassan Habib Merhi, Hussein Hassan Oneissi and Assad Hassan Sabra .
According to the agency, the prosecution also discussed confiscation of Ayyash’s property.
On February 14, 2005, a major explosion rocked the capital Beirut, targeting Hariri’s motorcade and killing him, along with 21 other people, and then Lebanon entered a phase of political escalation.
Rafik Hariri is the father of Saad Hariri, who has been appointed since October 22 to form the new government and will be the fourth in his political career if formed.
