The pro-Syrian newspaper Al-Watan cited informed sources confirming the authenticity of what was published by the American Wall Street Journal about the visit of a secret US envoy to the capital, Damascus.
Sources revealed to the newspaper that the visit was made by two US officials, not one. He explained that the Special Envoy of the President of the United States for Abduction Matters, Roger Carstens, and the Assistant to the President and Director of Counterterrorism of the United States, Cash Patel, visited Damascus in August and met with the Chief of the Office of National Security, Major General Ali Mamlouk, in his office in Damascus, and they discussed a wide range of topics involving a series of offers and requests.
The sources added that “this is not the first visit by US officials at this high level, and it was preceded by three similar visits to Damascus in recent months and years.”
According to the information obtained by Al-Watan and calling it “confirmed”, Damascus informed US officials that “there is no discussion or cooperation with Washington before discussing the dossier of the withdrawal of the US occupying forces from eastern Syria.”
Damascus also refused, according to sources, to discuss the file of the Americans kidnapped in Syria, headed by the independent American journalist Austin Tice, “before discussing any other issue.”
The “Wall Street Journal” reported in a report Sunday night that a White House official recently made a secret visit to Damascus, where he held talks about kidnapped and missing Americans with the Syrian government.
