The president of the self-proclaimed Armenian-backed Karabakh Republic, Aryk Harutyunyan, announced that Azerbaijani forces are closing in on the strategic city of Shusha.
Harutyunyan said in a recorded statement from the city that was broadcast on his Facebook page today, Thursday, that the Azerbaijani side has mobilized a tangible group of forces in the Shusha axis and is seeking to control the city at any cost.
He said: “The enemy is currently several kilometers from Shusha, at a maximum distance of five kilometers … The main objective of the enemy is to capture Shusha … and I would like us to realize this and move from words to really participate in the defense of Shusha. “
The president of the unrecognized republic stressed that what is currently happening in Karabakh represents a “watershed historical moment”, calling on people in the region around the world to return and join the ongoing conflict.
Harutyunyan expressed his confidence in the ability of the Armenians to defend the city, which he described as “a symbol of the victories of the Armenian people and their determination to live in their homeland” and a “beating heart for all Armenians.”
He continued: “In the next few days, we must transform the field and punish the enemy at the gates of Shusha. Let’s unite and fight together!”
Shusha is located just 10 kilometers from Stepankert (Khankendi), the capital of the self-proclaimed republic.
