Pope Francis called on the international community to help Lebanon “stay away from regional conflicts and tensions” and “emerge from the acute crisis.”
In a message addressed to the Lebanese on the occasion of Christmas, the Pope announced that he intends to visit Lebanon “as soon as possible”, calling on Lebanese political and spiritual leaders to pursue the public interest because their time and their work are “for the state and for the country they represent.”
And he expressed his pain when he sees the pain and anxiety “that stifle the spirit of courage and vitality in which Lebanon has collapsed”, and when he thinks of the many young people “who have been taken from all hope of a better future” , and pointed out that the identity of Lebanon brings “to the whole world the anomaly of respect and coexistence AND pluralism” is the identity of “a people that does not abandon their homes and their heritage.”
