Beirut – An informed political source confirmed that Prime Minister-designate Mustafa Adib has postponed until next Friday to take a final position on the formation of the new Lebanese government.
The source revealed to “Al-Arab” that Adeeb, who visited the Republican Palace on Monday and met with President Michel Aoun, received “advice” from influential political parties in the hours prior to his departure from the Baabda Palace asking him to wait and he will not present a list of the names of the members of his cabinet to the President of the Republic. There was still information about the negative attitude of the president towards the prepared list, especially with the presence of an implicit veto from the Shiite duo (Hezbollah and Amal Movement).
These “tips” focused on the need to avoid the political vacuum that the country would fall into if the formation was rejected and Adeeb was forced to apologize.
Lebanon faces an economic and financial situation unprecedented since the end of the civil war, which has reflected a deterioration in social and security. The Lebanese, as well as the international community, fear that the faltering birth of the new government will lead to a vacuum that exacerbates the crises in Lebanon.
The meeting, which brought together Lebanese President Michel Aoun and the designated prime minister on Monday, was limited to consultations, contrary to what was scheduled for the latter to present his government formation, based on the French deadline.
The Prime Minister-designate simply told the journalists present at the Baabda Palace after the meeting with the help of “Today I came to Baabda to visit the President of the Republic for further consultations, and we hope all the best.”
France, which is sponsoring the formation of a new government in Lebanon, expressed resentment at the way the ruling triad in Lebanon had approached efforts to form the government, and the Foreign Ministry said, on Monday, that ` “ All Lebanese political forces supported the formation of a government quickly and must translate this commitment into action without delay. ”
French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Agnes von der Mol explained that Lebanese forces have been repeatedly reminded of the need to quickly form a government in order to implement basic reforms.
“All Lebanese political forces supported this goal. It is up to her to translate this commitment into action without delay. It is her responsibility.”
And the leaks spoke of President Michel Aoun refusing to approve the formation of the government in the proposed form (form and content), especially because of the strict messages he received from the Shiite duo that there is no place for a government without his fingerprints. .
The political source, who closely follows the efforts to form a new government to undertake the required reforms, said Mustafa Adeeb before delaying taking a decisive position in imposing government regulation on his pocket pending the dissolution of the Shiite knot that it boils down to insisting on taking over the Ministry of Finance.
The adherence of the Shiite duo to the fiscal portfolio is due to the fact that no government decision that does not satisfy them is approved, which is rejected by Adeeb, who insists on cutting the rotation policy in terms of ministerial portfolios and stresses that the government should be composed of specialists who can work independently of political forces.
According to the Taif Agreement, any decision made by the government must be signed by the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the Competent Minister, in addition to the signature of the Minister of Finance.
Previously, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who in recent days entered the training line with force, persuaded the leader of the Amal Movement, Nabih Berri, who also holds the presidency of Parliament, to hand over the portfolio for the benefit of a non-Shiite minister, so his attempts were rejected, prompting French President Emmanuel. Macron to try to solve the problem himself, but he does not appear to have succeeded, and Berri had previously said that “obtaining this bag from the Shiites is a matter of charity that is beyond reproach.”
The Lebanese political source stressed that it would not be easy to wait for a flexible position from Hezbollah to form a government headed by Mustafa Adeeb, given that this would mean a setback in his political office after he reached a stage where he could impose a Christian president, in the case of Michel Aoun, and elect president. The Sunni cabinet, in the case of Hassan Diab.
Another source mentioned that the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, considers the Finance Minister’s issue to be Shiite as a personal matter, especially after he recently confirmed that he will not accept any changes in the doctrine of those who hold this position in the government.
A prominent Lebanese politician summed up the situation by saying that there is an extremely important factor that the Lebanese ignore, and that is the Iranian factor. This politician said that Iran is not ready to easily liberate a Lebanese government that is not under the control of Hezbollah, especially as it sees Lebanon as one of the negotiating roles with the United States at a future stage.
On August 31, Lebanese President Michel Aoun appointed Mustafa Adib to form a government, which coincided with a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to Beirut on the occasion of the centenary of Greater Lebanon, during which he obtained the commitment of the parties. Lebanese politicians to form a government in a period not exceeding two weeks.
Hassan Diab’s government resigned 6 days after the attack on the port of Beirut, which left around 192 dead, almost 6 thousand injured and dozens missing, in addition to widespread destruction, with losses of more than 15,000 million dollars.
