The Jordanian Parliament is holding an emergency session to discuss the repercussions of the Salt Hospital accident following the death of 9 people due to lack of oxygen, while King Abdullah II assigned the Minister of the Interior the management of the Ministry of Health, after Nazir Obeidat resigned due to the incident that occupied the Jordanian street.

The Jordanian official agency (Petra) stated that King Abdullah II issued today, Sunday, two royal decrees to approve the assignment of Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya to manage the Ministry of Health and to remove Health Minister Nazir Obeidat of your position.

Today, Sunday, the Jordanian Parliament began a session that is expected to be tumultuous with the presence of the government to discuss the repercussions of the incident at the Al-Salt Government Hospital after the dismissal of the Minister of Health and the director of the hospital, during which it will be heard the government’s response on the investigation mechanism and its progress in the case.

Prime Minister Bishr Al-Khasawneh claimed that his government is responsible for what happened at Salt Hospital and its enthusiasm, if so, to address the causes of the accident and strive not to repeat it.

Al-Khasawneh said during the House of Representatives session on the incident at Salt Hospital, that the government “will not shirk or shirk responsibility for the lack of basic service in hospitals in light of the coronavirus pandemic.”

He referred to the government’s action in requesting the Council of the Judiciary to carry out an independent investigation and to assume political responsibility to restore public trust, pointing out the importance of making an “administrative revolution together with investment.”

Incident details

For their part, the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Health in charge, Mazen Al-Faraya, explained that a report had been received on the lack of oxygen in the isolation and intensive care rooms at 7:12 am yesterday Saturday and Civil Defense arrived at 18 minutes and worked to secure oxygen and recovery cylinders, indicating that the death toll reached 6 dead before the company supplied oxygen to the tanks at 9:15, while 3 people they died after that, and the cause of their death has not been determined, either from lack of oxygen or from another cause.

He added that oxygen control procedures include the need to inform the interested company with the supply if the percentage of oxygen reaches 40%, and if the percentage reaches 20%, the system issues a warning of the need for supply, but if the percentage reaches 5%, the devices in the isolation and diligent care rooms emit a warning of danger due to lack of oxygen, which was not handled by the hospital personnel involved.

He pointed out the immediate measures taken by the government, the most important of which are: the assignment of civil defense cadres in hospitals to inspect oxygen 3 times a day, as well as in supplier companies, to ensure that the quantities are sufficiently available, and specialist in each hospital, in addition to monitoring the two oxygen supply companies to the hospitals of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

It also revealed the establishment of an oxygen plant by the armed forces, which will be able to produce 600 cylinders in 3 weeks and 10 tons in April.

Protesters in Salt City and several other Jordanian cities demanded, last night, the departure of Prime Minister Bishr Al-Khasawneh’s government and accountability for those who neglected the lack of oxygen at the Salt Government Hospital.

The King of Jordan had instructed the formation of a military medical committee of the medical services to determine the circumstances of the accident. Meanwhile, the Jordanian prosecutor arrested five Al-Hussein hospital staff and supply personnel for a week and charged them with murder and abuse.
