Paula Ostieh writes in Asharq Al-Awsat:

Parties that took a hit that some believed could be a deal breaker after the October 17, 2019 uprising, were unsuccessful and absorbed the losses they suffered. Despite the failure of the “intifada” to ensure continuity and propose an alternative to the system in force for 30 years, the phenomenon of “party flight” that was activated during the movement was enough to push the parties to devise new strategies to reduce this leak and try to restore the “defectors”.

Undoubtedly, this phenomenon was not exclusively linked to the “intifada”, but was aggravated by economic conditions, after a large number of supporters and sympathizers of the party considered that its leaders had not managed to manage the country.

Perhaps the phenomenon of the “escape” mainly affected the “Free Patriotic Movement” as a result of holding a large part of President Michel Aoun’s Lebanese people responsible for the crises that immediately erupted. Al-Tayyar sources confirm that this phenomenon has remained limited, contrary to what it promotes, noting in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat that “Whoever has sufficient political awareness realizes that the Pact and the Movement have nothing to to do with all these crises, and that there are those who intend to put burdens on them to block responsibility for him after he faced all our reform projects at all levels, thinking that the Temple will fall exclusively on our head! “

The leader who broke with the “Free Patriotic Movement”, Antoine Nasrallah, highlights the need to distinguish between “partisans” and those involved in the orbit of the parties, considering that the movement relies mainly on non-partisan sympathizers who began to abandon before October 17, without forgetting that this phenomenon increased after the uprising, which even affected many committed adherents, some of them abandoned leadership positions, the revolution was not able to create a new framework to attract them.

Nasrallah considers that “the decision of more than one deputy to leave the powerful Lebanese bloc is a clear indication of the magnitude of the unrest that is brewing,” noting in a statement to “Asharq Al-Awsat” that “instead of putting to face what is happening, the head of the movement is counting on the great change in the region to regroup the defectors around him. ” And, in my opinion, it is a wrong bet, “he said, adding,” if parliamentary elections are held, the movement will reap a great loss. Therefore, the by-elections have been postponed. “

Like the Free Patriot, the Movement of the Future has been suffering for some time from the phenomenon of flight. This is what Mustafa Alloush, the leader of the Future, wants due to the absence of Prime Minister Saad Hariri for a period, as well as the presidential agreement that contributed to the arrival of General Aoun to the presidency.

Alloush believes that “the concern of people is now elsewhere, as they seek to reduce political and sectarian slogans and focus on ensuring their livelihood, and therefore, if there is someone who helps people, either directly or improving financial and social conditions, then he will be able to attract them again. ” Noting in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat that “Prime Minister Hariri’s success in halting the decline and giving hope to the Lebanese is more important than putting forward political slogans that do not concern the people at this stage, and that I am convinced that the issue is also political, especially the issue of illegal weapons, it is one of the causes of the deterioration of the economy. ” “.

According to Ali Al-Amin, a prominent Shiite opponent of Hezbollah, “There is a clear decrease in the size of the Shia duo’s supporters, and the manifestation of an increasing volume of those who object, which was revealed by all the events that took place. in the period after October 17, 2019 “. By satisfying the aspirations of Shiite citizens at the economic, vital and state level, “he added,” duality lost an important part of the appeal of providing benefits from public money, but did not lose the security control that has become the most important element. strong to control and capture the public. “

As for the “Progressive Socialist Party”, its sources indicate that “at the level of party organization we have not witnessed a significant flight, and it can be classified as a serious phenomenon of flight, especially because the level of discipline and party commitment is high. in the party, “noting that” in the surrounding environment, as in parts There was sympathy for the revolution, and this is a natural and understandable issue. In the end, the party element is the child of society, and its suffering is not different from the suffering of the rest of the Lebanese people.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, sources acknowledge that there is “a constant need to carry out a periodic self-critical review to reformulate a political discourse in line with the requirements of change. This review is carried out before the uprising, and we express our objection to many of the policies adopted that we did not have the circumstances to really change. ” The balance of power in the constitutional institutions and the government ”, stressing at the same time that“ just as the parties are required to carry out a periodic critical review, the revolution is also required to do so because most of the points that the parties criticize they don’t apply them ”.

As for the “Lebanese Forces” party, it is not very interested in the issue. His sources affirm that he was not negatively affected by the uprising, mainly because he identified with it, considering in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat that “what the party recently achieved in the elections of the Lebanese American University is the greatest test of it, since all the political forces withdrew from the competition that we insist on fighting and harvesting ourselves. 10 seats versus 4 seats for the revolution, and we also won the presidency of the Student Council. “
